Kashmir is known for the traditional hand embroidery of shawls. I in private homes women spin the fine wool. Traditonally the pricy shawls will be embroidered by men, but today mechanical embroidery is also established.
There are two kinds of embroidery :
The embroidery via a needle is known as "sozni". Another kind is called "ari" or chainstiching in flowery patterns.
The thread for the above is of cotton, stable, wool or silk. A hook is used instead of a needle to work more diversified.
